Mental Health America

Mental Health America is the nation’s leading national nonprofit dedicated to the promotion of mental health, well-being, and illness prevention. Our work is informed, designed, and led by the lived experience of those most affected.

Operating nationally and in communities across the country, Mental Health America advocates for closing the mental health equity gap while increasing nationwide awareness and understanding through public education, direct services, tools, and research. Our annual State of Mental Health in America report is among the most widely respected health reports in the nation.

Speakers discussed policies that promote effective integration and financing of mental health care in schools. Research shows care outcomes have positive impact on health, attendance, and achievement. Topics also included coordinating between school and outside community care. State programs were highlighted, including Kaiser Permanente's work with the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI) in California to support children, youth, and families.
This discussion focused on policies to support housing-first, and supportive housing programs as well as nutrition security (SNAP, WIC, reduced lunch programs). It described ways to align eligibility across systems so that systems work together to better share data across programs. It tied food and housing indicators to mental health and highlighted research that indicates the greatest impact on mental health is on children in families.
This panel discussed the connection between mental health and financial insecurity and effective interventions which include direct cash assistance and other financial supports such as the Child Tax Credit. The panel also highlighted the importance of non-discriminatory policies such as not requiring drug testing.
